The 2009 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures estimates 5.1 million Americans over age 65 years have Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's Disease is the fifth leading cause of death in Americans over 65. By year 2050, it is estimated 14 to 16 million Americans will have Alzheimer's Disease. Before a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease can be made, clinical questions, a complete history and physical exam and cognitive screening tests need to be performed. Clinical lab tests and radiologic studies may also need to be performed to rule out other causes of dementia. Lab tests may include a Complete Blood Count (CBC), chemistry profile, thyroid function tests, Vitamin B12 levels, ESR, VDRL, Urinalysis, HIV test, and possible heavy metal screen. Radiologic studies may Chest X-rays, MRI, CT or PET scans. Ancillary tests include EKG, EEG, lumbar puncture (LP) or brain biopsy.

NIH Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's Disease accounts for 50-80% of dementia and remains a diagnosis of exclusion. Other causes of dementia include diffuse Lewy body disease, Parkinson's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal ganglionic degeneration, hydrocephalus, Huntington's disease, multi-infarct dementia, and chronic subdural hematomas. In contrast to the previous causes of dementia, Alzheimer's Disease is characterized by progressive dementia with minimal abnormal motor signs.
