Understanding the complexity of normal neuroanatomy and neurophysiology in humans is one of the last frontiers to be explored to better understand diseases and disorders of the human central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems. Sophisticated studies, including Positron Emission Tomography and MRI, allow dynamic studies of brain activity.
While these modern studies are helpful, there can be no abandonment of a careful and complete history, review of systems, and physical examination of the patient including adequate mental status and neurological examinations. The patient often presents with a chief complaint as to why he/she is visiting the healthcare provider. Determining the time course of the chief complaint helps define the etiology of the patient's healthcare problem. After this preliminary information is obtained, a differential diagnosis of possible diseases or disorders affecting the patient may involve selective test ordering such as EEG, EKG, MRI and CT scans, sleep studies, lumbar puncture and laboratory studies.
We hope this website and its NIH links provide introductory useful information regarding common neurological diseases. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Byron L. Barksdale, M.D.
